Mt. Pleasant residents are excited with the possibilities of a public park on Shem Creek. The current proposal calls for a $2 million transformation into a public park.
Those in opposition, specifically Mt. Pleasant Town Councilman Joe Bustos, fear that this particular area of Shem Creek will become too congested with boats.
Deputy Town Administrator Eric Demora explained a few of the proposed changes. The empty half-acre lot that the town purchased will become a parking lot with public restrooms and benches. Additionally, the creek will remain open with a boardwalk extending out into the water.
The boardwalk will extend 1100 feet down the hummock island and will be filled with educational exhibits that highlight native plants and animals that park visitors may see on their visit. Additionally, there will be an observation tower that will enhance the superb view of the area.
Plans will begin to take place in six months, and construction will begin in one year.
