The third in our Mount Pleasant Golf Series, this video visits the Dunes West Golf and Country Club. If you’ve viewed our other two videos (Rivertowne and Patriots Point), you know that the golf courses in the Charleston area each have their own unique distinguishing features, and Dunes West is no exception. In this video, we interview Dunes West membership and athletic club director Candace B. Crompton and take a tour of the club.
The entrance to Dunes West in northern Mt. Pleasant is located off Highway 41, which connects to Highway 17. The Dunes West grounds is situated on the historic site of Lexington Plantation, which dates back to before 1670. In 1930, Henrietta Hartford purchased the estate and built a 32-room home, a saltwater swimming pool, a nine-hole golf course and tennis courts on the property. Mrs. Hartford became Princess Pignateli in 1937 when she married Prince Guido Pignatelli of Italy. Dunes West Golf Club was developed in 1991.
Dunes West is an Arthur Hills–designed course that features five sets of tees. The course is fun for all levels of players, and with its views of Wagner Creek, it is absolutely gorgeous. The semi-private Dunes West Golf and Country Club is home to just over 900 members who enjoy advanced tee-time booking, member-exclusive events (such as member-only golf tournaments and parties), range passes, pro-shop and food discounts and discounted meeting room rental rates.
Besides golf, the country club offers nine tennis courts (hard and clay courts available), a fitness center and swimming pool. Dunes West is not just a country club. It is an entire golf course community. The neighborhood consists of over 2,000 homes and subdivisions geared toward both young families with children and retirees. Dunes West is also a popular wedding venue; they have hosted thousands of weddings, anniversary parties and birthday events over the years. The club also attracts professional golf events, such as the PGA Tour’s Amoco Centel Classic in 1992, and awards, including the Charleston Golf Course Owners Association’s 2009 Golf Course of the Year Award and 2011 Employee of the Year Award. The Knot magazine brides have named Dunes West Best in Weddings for the past four years. The club prides itself in offering the best in customer service and Southern hospitality and strives to make its guests and members feel at home.
