Newton Builders Awarded Bid on Mount Pleasant’s Memorial Waterfront Park
By admin | April 1, 2008
Hopefully by Memorial Day Weekend of next year Mount Pleasant will have a new park. Warren Pruitt of ADC Engineering is the project designer for Memorial Waterfront Park and the first phase of his project includes a 1,200-foot-long pier, 6,200-square-foot visitor center, 1,400-square-foot open-air sweetgrass pavilion, a war memorial and a playground that will include unusual elements such as a sand castle and a beach.
Much of the pier has already been constructed by the state Department of Transportation using pilings for the old Silas Pearman Bridge. But the fishing pavilion at the end of the pier has yet to be constructed and shade structures with swings, a snack and tackle shop and bathrooms are all still waiting to be built.
The war memorial will include an eight foot sculpture of a woman cast in bronze holding a tri-folded flag in her left hand presented to grieving widows and mothers. According to the Post and Courier’s Prentiss Findlay “Her right hand will rest on a World War II helmet supported by a rifle.” Ray Kaskey was the one chosen by the town to create the sculpture.
The $9.1 million contract was awarded to Newton Builders Inc. by a town council committee. They were selected to construct the first phase of the new park. Out of 6 bids Newton’s was the lowest. Other companies were submitted bids were were Palmetto Construction Group, Brantley Construction Co., LJ Inc., Coward Hund and Chandler Builder Services.
